"I don't want to go."

Yep day later and I’m still sad and all woe at David Tennant no longer being the Doctor, though he’ll always be my Doctor ;) It was a fun send off even if some plot holes still have me scratching my head. And:-

Master: I don't know what I'd be without that noise
Doctor: Wonder what I'd be without you.

God I love the slash Bromance XD The Master at the end realizing the Time Lords returning meant nothing good for him was a great bit. Especially after the Doctor explained all the evils that were to come along with the Time Lords coming. So well we have Matt Smith as the Dr now so lets see how he does ;)

Plus! Why do the US TV stations always feel the need to remake British TV? Just heard that their doing a US remake of Being Human and I’m wondering ‘why?’ Yes it’s fabulous and great but it’s not like the UK is that far away from the US in cultural understanding and language that it would be a problem to just use the original instead. I can never see the point really, okay the Office remake was good but then they went on to remake Life on Mars, Coupling, One Foot in the Grave ect Which erm least said about them the better.

You never see us going ‘You know Supernatural would be so much better set in Huddersfield’ It’s not like US audiences won’t watch a UK show, the popularity of Harry Potter has proved that accents don’t get in the way. It seems such a waste to me when they're are so many original scripts waiting to be picked up on both sides of the pond.

I remember the attempted Red Dwarf US remake, thank God that never made it past a pilot.

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god I forgot all about that, I watched the pilot once and gawd it was a car wreck. If Dave isn't a curry eating slob or Rimmer's not a sniveling smeghead it's not Red Dwarf X_X

[identity profile] katamanda.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God, yes. Lister's actor looked so macho and cool, not an overweight, slobby spacebum.

I think with Being Human, it's prolly partly due to Twilight making vampires the 'in-thing'. Which makes me scared they might try to reinvent it as some teen, heartthrob drama.
When it comes down to it, I'm sure it's some executive deciding that remaking it will get them more money than buying the original show to broadcast. Usually the only thing I can think of an American remake have better for it is that they can afford bigger budgets for special effects.

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
They even made Cat female 0_o

I agree, they'll go for making it look pretty and such with the actors and affects and forget that characters like George are supposed to look nerdy and uncool. It they turn it into 'The Vampire Diaries' I'll cry. I just hope the remake won't lose some of it charm, that they seem so ordinary despite being monsters. I think the executives fail to notice it's got a massive US fanbase already, though that may have thrown the fuel on the fire for the remake :(

Could you ever imagine a US Blackadder? That would be scary X_X

[personal profile] starsandgraces 2010-01-02 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
They never seem to learn from the truly terrible remakes, either. You'd think after most of them failing miserably, the TV executives might actually realise that it's a bad idea.

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree so much, though I don't think they'll ever learn sadly. Too many producers with dollar signs in their eyes thinking if it's popular in another country then they have to make it their own. I can kind of understand remaking old programs for the next generation but they seem to go for brand new shows which seems so wasteful when it's already been made.

[identity profile] conjure-lass.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I would guess one of the main reasons they tend to remake shows (it's not just British shows, trust me) is that I think they'd have to pay more to get the rights to show the actul show on US television than to simply buy the rights to remake it whatever way they want. And then they have all the rights to sell the show, and market the show, and make all the freakin' money they can, from said show.

Also...i've never heard of Coupling, One Foot in the Grave, or Life on Mars. Granted this could be because I do not watch television, but i've never even HEARD of them. They must have been baaaad.

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That does make a lot of sense, it also shows what a sorry state the industry is in that it would cost more to buy the show than make it from scratch. The problem with Being Human is like Jess pointed out below it's already being shown in the US, so I do wonder why they would want to have to go through the fuss of remaking it when someone has already bought the rights?

They were bad, well truthfully Life on Mars wasn't THAT bad it just pales in the face of the original, but that's probably me being bias as I love the original. The others do avoid X_X

[identity profile] kyriesanctus.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate US remakes, I obviously loved the Office, and I see where some things could get re-made but... IDK, they don't really need it? The only thing I see missing from UK productions is the overall... "finish" that the US tends to put on everything outside of reality shows. I like the "finish" but it's not the important part of a show, if my liking what little of Doctor Who I've seen is any indication. I had no problem understanding it, either.

Harry Potter ends up being pretty culture neutral, though- because they try to get it through to us that their culture is more 'wizard' than 'British' you know? Instead of using heavy British slang they use a lot more wizard slang which needs translating for everyone and not just American/other country readers. I mean, could you imagine how annoying it would be if they had to stop and translate every single bit of British slang for us American losers? XD

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
True, some US remakes can be great like Remus which was a remake of the UK's Cracker and of course I love the Office. US shows are much prettier than ours but sometimes something goes missing in the re-writes. Doctor Who is well known for being a bit dodgy in the effects department but that's it charm, it's the characters and stories that shine ;)A lot of US folks love it too so it shows things don't need to be remade just because they don't look like a diamond.

In the books they do use a lot of UK slang but it was changed in the US novels and yeah the films don't use it quite as much. I've seen people have a hard time understanding some of our stronger accents so I do understand what a pain in the arse it would be to stop and wonder what's being said.

[identity profile] jbadgr.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? The US is remaking Being Human? IT ALREADY AIRED IN THE STATES! I don't understand television here, I really don't. I suppose if there is a vampire in it, American broadcasting corps will just eat it right up, eh? Go tell the BBC to remake all the wretched American comedies, would you? ;)

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
They're so after making the next Twilight even if that means remaking something people have already seen for no reason what so ever. 6,000 people turned up at the Comic Con to say hi to the BH team, so it's not like it's not popular in the US.
(We tried once, it failed horribly and we learned not to do that ever again ;D )

[identity profile] split-psychosis.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
=A=; To be honest? The majority of US remakes of well...ANYTHING pisses me off. Of course there's a few that are good but...enghh. /is not looking forward to one of her favourite movies being remade oh no not at all

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think i've ever seen a remake of a foreign film that was as good a the first, Quarantine can't beat REC and I fell asleep watching the Ring ;) Would that be 'Let the right one in'?

[identity profile] split-psychosis.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that. And yes =A=; they're going to butcher it rage.

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
As soon as I read about it I thought 'Poor Ciara' There is no way they'll be able to capture the creepy silence the film had or Eli and Oskar's relationship as well as the first.

This year is remake heaven in the film industry, they're even re-doing Nightmare on Elm Street for crying out loud ;_;

RP JOURNAL LOL |D;

[identity profile] byte-me-baby.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah T_T; And =_= even worse, they're going to lose the whole 'lol Eli is actually a boy' thing and just make Eli into a chick. Which makes me SO MAD RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Just watch. Ugh. Lolol even the director of the original movie is raging about the remake. |D; Poor guy.

...WHY ;A; dflkjs

LOL cool name :D

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
They are? God why can't they do what the Swedish director did. It was so ambiguous in the film about Eli's gender (I though he was a girl because Lia is a girl LOL) and wasn't till I read up online I realised they did that on purpose to stay close to the book. I really have to pick up the novel X_X

I have hope it will make people watch the original, only to find out it's superior.

|D ww <3

[identity profile] byte-me-baby.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you go to the wiki entry for it and click the actors they're using for the remake...=_=; clearly Eli is going to be a chick. At least in the Swedish one they dubbed over her voice with a boy and made her androgynous and also flashed the scar where Eli's poor parts would have been |D; BUT LOL as if America would do that =A=; cause oh noooo that'd be illegal etc or whatever. Muh.

The book is AMAZING and you're right, I hope at least it'll make people look at the original and read the book. Just how the Umineko anime is introducing fans to the Visual Novels |Db

Re: |D ww <3

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah they do have a very girly girl playing Eli, no mistaking her for a boy. That scene puzzled me so much as I hadn't read the novel so I was 'huh????? was that a scar?' derp! I can see the pedo police smashing down the directors door if he dared to show Eli like that. So I guess they will go for her being a her so they won't have too, which sucks because it's a awesome twist that Eli's a boy.

Yeah it's like they brought out the Ring mangas after the US film. Umineko is another show I have to check out too. argh too much to read and watch, so little time :D

Re: |D ww <3

[identity profile] byte-me-baby.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
=A=; yeah ughhhhhhhhhhh UGHHHHHHHHH rage. |D;

That's true ;n;/ Ohhh you should. XD Watch the anime before you play the games but I really suggest playing the VNs too because they cut out A LOT and butcher Beatrice and Battler at the end ;n; wuuuu.

[identity profile] yuna-aoki.livejournal.com 2010-01-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Well THANK YOU. The first not totally mediocre Spanish film in decades and they remake it. WTF.

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-10 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What's worst is they remade it frame for frame and it still sucked :(

[identity profile] yuna-aoki.livejournal.com 2010-01-09 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
*watched it today* Man, I'll never forgive the writers for Ten's last words. I'M HEARTBROKEN, HE WAS SO ALONE AND HE DIDN'T WANT TO GO *sobs*

By the way, I'm with you on the remake topic. Did you know that there is a Spanish remake of Life on Mars too? :'D I LOL'd at my TV when I saw the promo. Anyway, I think remaking Life on Mars has its logic, as it shows some of the country's past. But Being Human? The Hell. At least they haven't tried to remake Doctor Who. That'd be horrible.

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-10 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god I know, it broke my heart when he said that with tears in his eyes. It kind of felt like it was really Tennant saying it, I think I was in tears through most of the show but that bit opened the flood gates ;_;

No I didn't, oh god they better not mess up the end and miss out on Sam and Genes chemistry like the US version did. But I can understand that too as your 70's was probably a lot different than the UK's.

They tried to set Doctor Who in the US with 8th Doctor, it really didn't work that well at all ;_; It's charm to me is that it's very eccentric and very English.

[identity profile] yuna-aoki.livejournal.com 2010-01-10 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was TOO CRUEL. Nine had AWESOME last words. Bittersweet, cheeky, he got to say 'Fantastic' one more time and went out with a bang. Ten ended up sad, alone, scared and heartbroken, despite being one of the friendliest, dorkiest doctors. IT ISN'T FAIR. And then Matt Smith intrudes in my sad scene. Sigh.

That’s right, I thought it made a teeny tiny bit of sense, but I decided to stay away from it. They even changed the title of the show to La Chica de Ayer (The girl of yesterday (?) OH WHY) which I think references an 80s song. Anyway, BLEH. Life on Mars without John Simm? Not Life on Mars.

/facepalm. So they actually tried? The Doctor is English through and through. Just the thought of him being American is really, really weird.

[identity profile] loobeeinthesky.livejournal.com 2010-01-10 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man that's what I thought too. He has so many friends and people who love him and yet he seems so alone. He is even willing to forgive the master just to have someone there to care for. It was cruel!

That's weird, makes you think Sam is a girl. They went with the Bowie song as I think the lyrics have a lot to do with the show. So true John Simm 'makes' Life on Mars, he just draws you in emotionally. He's one of my favourite actors right now.

Well they kept the Doctor English but evey thing else was very American and it was played very straight, it missed some of the warm goofiness the Doctor has.
