30 Days of Who meme - day 2
Jul. 8th, 2010 06:43 pmDay 02 – Your favorite classic series story
Oh dear! Now having to choose an absolute favourite out of so many brilliant episodes was too hard so I narrowed it down to erm six, you know just in case you’re new to classic Who and would like to check some out and not because I couldn't make my mind up ;P
1.The Mind Robber
Gleefully silly. How many times can you see the Doctor save the day with the power of fanfiction or purposely put Jamies face on wrong? It’s a fun spirited adventure into a world of fiction where The Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe meet Gulliver, Rapunzel, and D’Artagnan. They also run into dangerous fictional creatures like the Minotaur and Medusa. The Mind Robber is an early example of how Doctor Who is a show that can literally go anywhere–even to places that aren’t meant to exist. Oh not to mention the main bad guy wrote a book about a Captain Jack Harkaway, cutting a tad close to a certain nu Who's Captain Jack Harkness me thinks XD
2.Invasion
This story puts The Doctor’s other nemeses, The Cybermen, in the spotlight and provides us with some truly iconic imagery which still holds up this very day. It goes to show that less is more when it comes to showing the threat and that humans can be worst than the monsters themselves. This episode also provides us with a fantastic debut of UNIT, led by The Doctor’s longtime friend, Brigadier Alistar Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. They had to animate two of the episodes as they were victims of the BBC destruction of the master tapes but they fit the story wonderfully.
3. War Games
This is a great Doctor Who Story and the last of Patrick Troughton's Era as the Doctor, where The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe land in what appears to be no-mans land during the First World War and as the story progresses they find that something is wrong and cross several war zones from diffrent time periods on Earth including The Roman Zone and The American Civil War Zone and they find out why the Aliens are taking soliders from these Time Zones for there own ends.
Also at the end of the story we meet for the first time The Doctor's people The Timelords and why he chose to leave them and wander the Universe, and it sets up Jon Perwtee's Era as the Doctor.
Okay enough Second Doctor era in case you think I’m being bias *grins*
4. Inferno
Sadly haven’t got round to watching much of the Third Doctor again and what I can remember from my youth is pitiful but this episode will always stand out to me. The idea is simple, but effective and we get to see a dystopian alternate world which is a little further along with the same experiment in 'our' world. The Brigadier in this world is a domineering but ultimately cowardly 'Brigade Leader' (sans moustache!) and is a highlight, but you get the sense from these episodes that all the actors enjoyed playing different personae (I expect Pertwee was a little jealous at missing out, if truth be told!).
5. Caves of Androzani
The fifth Doctors last outing and his swansong is one of the best ever (RTD are you watching?) It’s also a tightly woven tale of betrayal and revenge. Particularly Peter Davison gives the performance he has always wanted to give as The Doctor. This is one where we see the Doctor putting the life of his companion before his own.
6. Earthshock
This one really affected me when I was younger because it showed the death of a companion I was rather fond of (even if everyone else hated him :P) It was a sobering reminder of the dangers that The Doctor faces in his travels. Just because you travel with The Doctor, it doesn’t mean you’re invincible.
Then of course you have ones like Logopolis/Castrovalva, City of Death, Genesis of the Daleks,The Mind of Evil, The five Doctors, Tomb of the Cybermen but I'd be at this forever if I don't stop now XD
